Farm animals

Part 5

A short little tale for this month.

One of the loveliest things about moving to our new home was becoming a chicken owner.

I didn’t really know much about chickens before I moved here, but with the house came 5 chickens. 3 hens and 2 cockerels to be precise.

Apparently, cockerels can fight and need quite a few hens to keep them let’s say satisfied. So, we went about purchasing some new hens to keep the peace. And with that came a new hutch as we now had more chickens. Spring arrived and with it arrived some broody hens and yes you guessed it we had a raft of little chicks – one of the nicest things about springtime is to hear them chirping away.

As we’ve all got to know each other better I realise they all have their own little personalities. Some are bolshy, some are just scared of everything, some like to be on their own and wander off away from the pack. They also can be mean to each other which I didn’t realise, and they are fiercely protective over their chicks (I once saw a hen try to have a fight with a cow because it was getting too close the chicks – luckily no one was harmed). They're also the bottom of the food chain and we have lost more than I care to remember, which is always sad but it is farm life.

Anyway here are some pictures. Hope you like them.
